Cobalt-decorated stoneware jar

c. 1835-1850
Recovered from the Edwards Place privy
Collection of the Illinois State Musem

Cobalt decorations did not become common in the Midwest until after 1860, indicating that this jar was made elsewhere (likely Ohio or Pennsylvania) and brought to Springfield bearing food products for sale or as a gift.
